One of the popular tourist attractions in Naples is the Royal Palace whose adjacent grounds house the San Carlo Theater, a museum, the National Library of Naples and a number of city offices, including those of the regional tourist board.

The palace itself happens to be one of the four residences used by the Bourbon Kings of Naples during their rule of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (1730-1860), the others being the palace in Caserta, the palace on the Capodimonte hill overlooking Naples and the palace in Portici on the slopes of Vesuvius. The third one now houses the agricultural department of the University of Naples.

The Royal Palace was designed by Domenico Fontana and it was erected on the site of an even older Spanish viceroyal residence from the early 16th century. The royal residence was moved to Caserta in the 18th century, as that inland town was more defensible from naval assault than Naples.

Various modifications and additions have been made to the palace giving it the present look. Resorations were made after a fire had damaged much of the palace and also after World War II to repair bomb damage. The western façade side of the building displays a series of statues of the rulers of dynasties to rule Naples since the foundation of the Kingdom of Naples in the twelfth century. They are: Roger II, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, Charles of Anjou, Alfonse of Aragon, Emperor Charles V, Charles VII of Naples, Joachim Murat, and Victor Emanuel II of Savoy, the first king of united Italy.

Forty meters below the characteristic and lively streets of the Historic Center of Naples, there lies a different unexplored and isolated world characterized by a labyrinth of tunnels, tanks and cavities that form a real city which is the negative of the city on surface.

Napoli Sotterranea is the heart of Naples, and the place from which the city was born, a world which is about 2400 years old. Every historic epic, from the foundation of Neopolis, to the bombs of WWII, has left it’s mark on the walls of the yellow tufa stone, the soul of Naples, and the stone with which the city was built. This “tufacea” rock has particular characteristics of lightness, friableness and stabilities.

This underground was originally used to satisfy the requirements of water. The basement cisterns were used to pick up the rain and used to have material to build in Naples. Under Roman rule the waterworks was extended and improved, but under Angioni rule, in 1266, the city had a new urban expansion with an increase of extraction of “tufo” for new buildings.

Later, this underground came as rescue during the second world war, when it offered refuge to the population adapting the structures of waterworks to the requirements of the citizens.

The guided tours to this underground take you under the Spanish Quarters, in vico S. Anna di Palazzo 52, where Michele and Salvatore Quaranta brothers, have founded the Free Association Underground Hikers that has for objective the grater knowledge of “the inferior” city. When you descend into the cavities of the old cisterns of the Carmignano waterworks, you will be able to admire the feelings of who those took refuge there during the war.

The walls of the underground bear drawings of history pages, names and caricature of personality of the age, customs of the age, soldiers of several nations, dates, information on the two Italian submarines – the Diaspro and the Topazio – that operated during the war, and many other fascinating writings.

Naples, the capital of the Campania region, and the third most populated city of Italy was named after Neapolis. Naples has one of the biggest historical centres in the world which has also been deemed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the various tourist attractions in Naples is the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, which happens to be the biggest Rroman architectural museum in the World, even bigger than the National Museum of Rome.

Located in Piazza Museo, the National Archaeological Museum houses in a lovely pink building which stands in a corner of what was once the wall of the Greek city of Neapolis. Over a span of years, the museum received collections of antiquities from all over Italy, both from private collectors and from various excavations.

The museum takes pride in its extensive collection of Greek and Roman artifacts, the principal among which are the Farnese Collection of engraved gems and the Farnese Marble sculptures. The museum also displays well-preserved delightful mosaics and beautiful frescoes. Naples Archeological Museum houses wall paintings and different objects removed from Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other excavation sites in the area. In addition, you can admire the Farnese collection of Roman sculptures (including the famous sculptures of the Caracala Baths). Also the tourists will find a collection of erotic Roman art which is referred to as The Secret Cabinet. The cabinet holds sexually explicit frescoes, household and other items that were excavated from Pompeii.

The museum can be visited daily from 9 am to 7 pm, although for those visitors who are already in the building, the museum stays open until 8 pm. It is closed Tuesdays and is not open on Christmas Day, December 25. There is also an audio guide available talking about the statue collection on the first floor, however most of the amazing artifacts such as original Roman murals of mostly Greek mythologies are not covered. All descriptions of the exhibits are in English and in Italian.

Virgil’s tomb is an ancient Roman burial vault as old as to the Augustan age, situated in Naples, southern Italy. It is there got at the entrance of the old Roman tunnel which is recognized as the grotta vecchia or cripta napoletana in the Parco Virgiliano in the Piedigrotta district of the city. Virgil’s tomb there is situated on the hill as located between the Mergellina and Fuorigrotta, as on the street that proceeds towards the north as along the coast, with nearness to a very old tuff quarry. At first impression it looks like a very small unimpressive-looking structure, having a small dome of rocks situated on the top of the park.

The tunnel was there constructed around the rule of Augustus connecting Neapolis to Pozzuoli and Baiae. However, the tunnel has been closed down for any further renovations and more the Tunnel is about 700 meters in length and is about four to six meters wide apart. As Virgil was already too famous for his literary works and too admired well before his death as in the following his name was made connected and became associated to the miraculous powers, his tomb as the object of pilgrimages and pagan veneration. It is said that the poet himself constructed the cave as due to the intense gaze and there with the intense powers.

When Virgil was on the dead bed at Brindisi in 19 BCE, he desired his ashes to be carried out to his villa as about outside the Naples. Hence a shrine was made for him and the sacred rites were organized there on his birthday. Otherwise it has been said the rites of a hero, at whose tomb the devout may find protection and counsel. Virgil’s tomb therefore became a center of pilgrimage as from centuries, and even literary legends as Petrarch and Boccaccio visited his shrine. It is also been told that the Chiesa della Santa Maria di Piedigrotta was there stand by the Church authorities to neutralise this pagan adoration and “Christianise” the site. The tomb yet is a very popular tourist attraction and still shows the tripod burner as connected and related to it. With the passage of the time the tomb fell into ruin as its exact location was forgotten. It is also said that the Virgil’s Bones there were protected Naples for many years and the attackers even suffered from plagues of flies.

The Vele di Scampia is a story all about a massive housing project that undertook place in years between 1962 and 1975 in the Scampia neighbourhood of Naples, Italy. Named as according to their triangular shape, as similar to of a sailing Wide at the base and further narrowing upside it goes the floors upwards. Construction of same sort is kept at the Villeneuve-Loubet in France, and can be clearly seen in the photos of the French city, the complex is named as Marina Baie des Anges. This has been occurred and come as a result of Law 167 1962 the seven sails Scampia Messo desgined by Franz Di Salvo were part of the housing project that too included the development of the city of Naples in the east or Jumpers.

Di Salvo’s started working on the designs of the structure way back in 1945 with the realization in company with and along with other architects like as, the District of Cesare Battisti Poggioreale. After years of the tiring labor the Salvo told the implantation of the district over two building structures and the types like as a “tower” and “tent”. The latter type, that provides the massive images to all the sails, is provided by the mixture of two buildings tilted lamellar and being separated by a bigger central void being there with large and long galleries suspended at a measurable height to be compared with the share housing. There were also too provided the social centers, a play space and the other community facilities.

But at present the Sails of Scampia buildings are in condition of complete jeoparady as there two buildings are yet even occupied by the residents as well. The core thought behind the project was to provide the massive housing settlement out there where a good number of families used to live in and integrate with each other. Between the sails there were provided the rail tracks and large park areas between the different sails. The actual thought behind the housing project was to give a big and provide the housing settlements where a good number of families can integrate and make up a community. The planners wanted to develop a city model have a large parks and a playing fields and other facilities as well.

Despite being putting this much of efforts into the construction of the building, there are many reasons that left out this project into the shambles. After the earthquake of 1980, there many families were left out homeless and many of those shelters less people started occupying houses illegally. Them they are much tolerated and ignored by the government and there more and more people started capturing the buildings as there they further included criminals as well. The first police station there in the region started and came into the operation since 1987 after the occupancy that started there fifteen years way back. By 2009, the Vele developed into a noted center of drug trafficking and illegal activities.
